How To Install Carpet Trim
A vinyl carpet runner is a piece of vinyl made to stick to the edge of a carpet. They are used to not just protect the carpet, but to also protect you from slipping. A vinyl carpet runner can be installed by professionals when they install the carpet or you can do it yourself. They can be used on a regular carpet to separate it from another floor type or used on stairs (the most common use). The article that follows will show you how to install a vinyl carpet runner to your steps but you can use the same technique on full carpet.
Step 1 - Measuring Vinyl Carpet Runner
It is important to measure each step as you work. Only start on the stop step first and work your way down to the last step. It is important to work one step at a time because each step may have slightly different measurements. Use the tape measure and measure one edge of the carpet to the other edge of the carpet. You then have to measure the depth of the carpet. Start at the back of the step and measure to the front of the carpet. Stop the measurement right before you get to the lip of the step where the carpet will just begin to curve.
Step 2 - Cut the Vinyl Carpet Runner to Fit
Each step may be different so you need a measurement for each step. Transfer the depth and width of the step to the vinyl carpet runner and draw a line so you can easily know where to cut it. Use a very strong pair of scissors to cut the vinyl carpet runner. Use the sandpaper to scuff the edge of the vinyl carpet runner. This will be the front of the runner and helps provide tread. Usually, the vinyl runner would be installed in one long piece but to avoid nailing it down you will be doing it in pieces.
Step 3 - Install the Vinyl Carpet Runner
The great thing about the vinyl carpet runner is that it is clear so that the carpet can still be seen through it. This method also prevents you from having to damage the steps with nails or hammering. The vinyl carpet runner has small plastic spikes on the bottom that dig into the weaving of the carpet. These little spikes keep the vinyl carpet runner from slipping underfoot. It is important to get the vinyl carpet runner centered on the step. Place the back of the runner near the back of the step. Carefully lay the runner down on the rest of the step so that the scuffed edge is right where the lip of the step is about to curve downward. Put even pressure on the vinyl carpet runner and slide it back and forth. This motion digs the teeth of the vinyl carpet runner between the weave in the carpet to grip it close to the step. Continue with each subsequent step.
