Determine if the battery on your lawn mower needs replacing by using a digital multimeter. A typical riding lawn mower uses a 12-V battery, and a rechargeable battery on an electric lawn mower is 24-V or 36-V. If the multimeter displays a reading less than 10.5 V on a 12-V battery, the battery has a dead cell and replacement is necessary. If your lawn mower won't crank or the battery doesn't seem to hold a charge, perform a quick test with a digital multimeter before you decide to purchase a replacement.
Lift the seat on your riding lawn mower to access the battery.
Turn on the digital multimeter and switch it to 'DC' or 'A' to test battery voltage. Set the meter to a value of 13 V for a 12-V battery, which is one value higher than the expected reading. For a 24-V or 36-V rechargeable battery, check the label on the battery to determine its voltage, and set the meter to at least one value higher than the voltage.
Grasp the leads above the finger guards on the probes, and place the red lead on the positive (+) post and the black lead on the negative (-) post on your battery.
Read the display on the digital multimeter. Replace the battery if you receive a reading of less than 10.5 V on a 12-V battery. If it reads 12 V or more, replacement of the battery is not required. If it reads 24 V or more on a 24-V battery, or 36 V or more on a 36-V battery, replacement of the battery is not required. Check for other problems that would prevent the lawn mower from starting.
Tip
Charge a rechargeable battery for an additional hour and retest if you receive a reading of less than the voltage of the battery. If the meter still shows a low reading, replace the battery.
