Chromium Libpdf.so Download

Posted on  by admin

Google’s PDF Plugin is most excellent for most needs – and for anything else you can actually download the PDF and do whatever you want to do with it (sidenote though: printing would be really nice. Pretty please, Google?). Unfortunately, it only ships with the official Chrome version and is therefore not available in the Chromium editions most distributions ship or make available.

Therefore, to get and enable the plugin on your favorite local Chromium version:

Chromium libpdf.so download pc
  • Download a Google Chrome release that matches your processor architecture (x86/x86_64):
    # wget http://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-unstable_current_i386.deb
    # wget http://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-unstable_current_amd64.deb
  • extract the .deb:
    # ar vx <previously downloaded .deb>
  • extract the data payload:
    # tar --lzma -xvf data.tar.lzma
  • copy the plugin to destination folder:
(note: /usr/lib/chromium-browser is valid for my Ubuntu PPA version, might be /opt/chromium-browser or something on other distributions)
    # sudo cp opt/google/chrome/libpdf.so /usr/lib/chromium-browser/
  • restart any open Chromium processes
  • check about:plugins for the Chrome PDF Viewer, should not need any enabling
  • Profit!

Download Chromium. You can test Chrome builds or Chromium builds. Chrome builds have the most infrastructure for analyzing crashes and reporting bugs. They also auto-update as new releases occur, which makes them a good choice for most uses.

  1. . While chromium does not provide this, chrome does, so you can steal it from there. First, download: wget Or, if you are running a 32bit system: wget Now, extract libpdf.so from the file you downloaded.
  2. To get the PDF viewer working in Chromium, so that you can click a PDF link and view it in your browser instead of requiring it to be downloaded, just do the following. First, download the Chrome.deb package: Extract the file opt/google/chrome/libpdf.so from.

Whenever I click on a link which contain a PDF file, Chromium automatically downloads the file. Instead, I would like to open it for my viewing rather than downloading it.

How can I achieve this?

You have two main options:

  1. Install an extension. For example this one: Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) which lets you view PDFs in Google Docs.

  2. While chromium does not provide this, chrome does, so you can steal it from there. First, download the chrome .deb:

Or, if you are running a 32bit system:

Now, extract libpdf.so from the file you downloaded. I don't use Unity but I believe you can do this using by right clicking the file and choosing Open With => File Roller or Archive Manager or similar. From the terminal you can do:

That will unpack the .deb, copy libpdf.so to the current directory and delete the unpacked data. You can now copy libpdf.so to /usr/lib/chromium-browser/:

Now restart your chromium and you should be able to view PDF files.

It will let you open pdf file in browser. You can also download those file if you wish.

By clicking on a link for a supported document format you'll be taken to the Google Docs Viewer. On the options page you can also disable any file formats you don't want to use the Viewer for.
